I need your help to help others with arthritis
When I started college I became crippled, could not walk more than a few feet, my hands were completely stuck in a C shape I was skinny with fat sausage like fingers, knees the size of pumpkins, and wrist that looked like they had golf balls on them. I could not flattened them out. I could not hold a toothbrush, or hair brush. I could not raise me arms up over my head. I had to have help getting dressed, etc….. found out I had arthritis due to lupus after going thru three doctors that had no clue what to do. One doctor actually told me when asked “what do I do?” replied “go eat a hamburger and we will try to slow down the progress”. Slow it down???…..I wanted to be better, not get worse slowly. I could not get in and out of car in less than 10 minutes. I found another Dr. in Memphis, TN. He told me I can get better but never be cured. Good enough for me, what do we do? My doctor put braces on my hands at night so I would not freeze up. I wouldn’t let myself fall asleep because I knew when I woke up I would be so stiff and in pain I couldn’t walk. I was on a chemotherapy drug, mass doses of prednisone, and other drugs for years. My doctor told me to start using 1lb. weights to keep range of motion. My doctor didn’t know much about exercise but he did know enough to keep me moving. When he said exercise I would do his little 1lb. weights for range of motion but I needed more so I would actually get down on the floor lay down then fight to stand back up. It was about 5 minutes of grueling pain every time I did it. But I didn’t know any better. I cannot tell you how much this affected my life, it would take a book to write. Met my husband in a gym (image that…lol). I needed a man that was going to be exercising for the rest of his life because I certainly am going to have to do that myself (or back to having someone else take care of me). It tool over 2 years and I finally fought off the symptoms. I got back my range of motion, mobility. I was now able to take care of myself. I fought off all the pain and got off all my medication all through exercise.
I am taking on the challenge to make a difference in our community by participating in the Arthritis Walk as a part of Let's Move Together, the Arthritis Foundation's nationwide movement that encourages people to move to prevent or treat arthritis.
Today, one in five people suffer from the pain of arthritis. The Centers for I have overcome the crippling effects of arthritis, and I am asking your help so we can help others. Thank you very much.
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) project that by the year 2030, 67 million people in the U.S., or 1 in 4 adults, will live with arthritis. You can join me in the movement against arthritis by helping me reach my goal. Let's Move Together to improve lives and reduce the pain of arthritis.
